Galloway Ridge, So Many Things To Do… Plenty of Time

Scene: Monday Morning. Typical residents at Galloway Ridge at Fearrington; husband and wife—affluent, educated, active. First choice of the day— make breakfast in the spacious villa, or head over to The Weatherfield Café for a casual meal and a visit with friends.

Second choice of the day: attend a DVD Lecture on Turning Points in American History, attend an acrylics class or take the shuttle bus over to Fearrington Village for some leisure time. Third choice of the day: enjoy Martini Monday at the Belties Lounge before going to the Players Lounge for Game Night, or enjoy an elegant meal in the formal dining room. Such is the life of individuals that have chosen Galloway Ridge at Fearrington as their retirement option.

Galloway Ridge is a non-profit lifecare continuing care retirement community (CCRC) located between Chapel Hill and Pittsboro and within walking distance of the charming Fearrington Village. The term “lifecare” means exactly that: regardless of how health needs change with age— from independent living to assisted living to skilled nursing and memory care—your costs will never increase. Unlike other CCRCs, Galloway Ridge provides residents with a predictable monthly payment regardless of level of care needed. In fact, The Wall Street Journal called Galloway Ridge “a prototype for future housing developments for older Americans.”

Galloway Ridge at Fearrington is surrounded by gently rolling hills that beg for morning walks, yet the facility is close enough to many of the Triangle cultural attractions. That being said, the core mission of Galloway Ridge is healthy aging by providing programs and services that enhance the social, spiritual, emotional, and health needs of the individual.

The state-of-the-art Duke Center for Living wellness center is on-site and accessible to residents at no additional charge The Center offers personal training, a huge indoor pool, senior-friendly fitness equipment, yoga, tai chi, and programs for managing arthritis. If tennis and golf suit your fancy, Galloway Ridge residents have access to these amenities at Fearrington Village. For medical care such as wellness checks and the occasional sniffles, Duke Primary Care Center has an office right on the campus.

Greg and I were invited to celebrate Earth Day with Galloway Ridge residents, and we were treated to a fi ve-course meal paired with an appropriate wine. The meal was prepared by Chef Brian Fitzgibbon, and the sommelier was Dave Bangert. How’s this for an entrée: a citrus-braised Cohen farm beef with a celery root and spring onion purée, grilled asparagus and crispy fried North Carolina sweet potatoes. The wine paring was Trivento Amado Sur Malbec.

Although this was a special dinner (off ered usually four times a year) the dining room off ers unique presentations daily. Chef Fitzgibbon oversees a staff of 20 who focus on seasonal “farm-to-table” freshness, as well as making sure special dietary restrictions—gluten free, diabetes, low sodium— are prepared with equal attention.

Currently there are 415 residents, but the capacity is 475. Residents have a choice of one or two-bedroom apartments or single family two and three-bedroom villas. Either choice offers maintenance free living: weekly in-home linen and towel laundry service; weekly housekeeping; maintenance of all residents and common areas; all landscaping and ground maintenance, and scheduled transportation. On site there is a billiard room, woodworking facility, art studio, performing arts center and cinema… and more.
